Most of the stonecutters around the turn of the century came to America from Europe. Many of these artisans had been trained in the art of cutting stone for generations. Barre, Vermont was one of the havens for the influx of stonecutters in the early 19th century. These artisans were involved in carving many of the statues that can be seen in large cities, including Washington DC. When other jobs were not available, these stone carvers would work on statues and headstones for cemeteries.
Images in this gallery were taken from across the U.S. and Europe. The photos are arranged into four galleries. The first gallery includes images that have been hand-tinted. The second gallery consists of sepia toned statuary images. The third gallery contains colored images. The fourth gallery consists of religious statuary. The images shown in the galleries contain watermarks and are low-resolution. Images on ordered prints will be from high-resolution scans and will not contain watermarks.
